Small weddings, tiny elopements, micro celebrations, call them what you will, they are here to stay, for at least the foreseeable future. For some, this is a deal breaker and a small get together to say the I do’s just isn’t going to be possible, but a for a few, the opportunity for teeny nuptials is actually a goer.
When we eventually do come out of the current lockdown, small weddings consisting of ceremonies and sit down meals may be happening again this Spring (hurrah!). So, if you’ve not made up your mind about whether a smaller wedding could be your cup of tea, read on for my reasons why they are ace. And remember, a small wedding is not a consolation prize; you have full permission to be excited over your wedding, no matter the size of the guest list.
You only have to invite those who you REALLY like.
Forget random plus ones of work colleagues, those cousins you’ve not seen since the Millenium and your parents friends who you’ve only met once. This small scale shindig will only have your nearest and dearest there, meaning you’ll actually get to talk to everyone. And you won’t have to endure an old fashioned receiving line (“nice to see you, thanks for coming, best wishes, warm regards etc”) Big guest lists on wedding days inevitably mean that you’ll not get around to talk to everyone, and you’ll feel guilty for not doing so. The micro wedding eradicates this for you. Boom!
No separate evening guests.
Controversial opinion here, but for guests rocking up for just the evening do at a wedding, it is a bit pants. Hear me out; they’ve missed the bulk of the merriment of the day, turning up in time to see the cake cutting (weird tradition IMO) the dancing and the buffet. Chances are those guests might only know the couple getting married, or worse still, just one of them (cue the weird “so nice to meet you, have you had a good day?” exchange) Dance floors won’t be happening anytime soon, so sack the evening do off, save the money and put in towards something else.
You’ll save money.
You don’t need to be Sherlock to know that weddings are expensive, so by having a smaller do, you’ll save a bit of moolah.
You can spurge that money you’ve saved on stuff you really love.
Upgrade the food and drink options to really luxurious ones, or put money towards an amazing honeymoon for when you can go further than the local park. Or maybe go all out on your outfits, or hire an amazing team of suppliers to make your day look and feel incredible.
What matters most is getting married.
Saying those words, aloud, to the love of your life is all that matters. Everything else is just a Brucie Bonus.
Maybe you’ll party later when large gatherings and celebrations are allowed, perhaps you’ll mark an anniversary with the awesome disco you never had. But if you don’t want any of that, then don’t feel bad, you don’t need a party to validate your wedding. Small is no less wonderful or magical or beautiful.
